10 quick wins to make your WordPress site faster

10 quick wins to make your WordPress site faster

Visitors leave slow websites, and search engines notice. The good news: most WordPress sites can be made dramatically faster with a handful of changes. Start here.

1. Choose a lean theme

Heavy multipurpose themes load dozens of scripts you never use. A lightweight, purpose-built theme is the single biggest speed gain.

2. Remove plugins you do not need

Every plugin adds code. Deactivate and delete anything unused, and replace heavy plugins with lighter ones.

3. Compress and resize images

Images are usually most of a page’s weight. Resize them to the size they are displayed at, and use modern formats such as WebP.

4. Lazy-load below-the-fold content

Images and videos further down the page do not need to load until the visitor scrolls to them.

5. Use caching

Page caching serves a ready-made copy of your page instead of rebuilding it for every visitor.

6. Keep everything updated

Updates bring performance and security improvements. Test them on a staging copy first.

7. Self-host and limit fonts

Use one or two font families, in as few weights as you need, and serve them from your own site.

8. Clean up the database

Remove old revisions, spam comments and expired transients that quietly pile up over the years.

9. Pick good hosting

Fast, reliable hosting close to your visitors matters. Cheap, overloaded servers cannot be fixed with plugins.

10. Measure, then repeat

Test your pages with tools such as PageSpeed Insights, fix the biggest items, and retest. Speed is not a one-time job.
