Odoo or custom software? How to choose an ERP for your company

Odoo or custom software? How to choose an ERP for your company

Sooner or later, most growing companies outgrow spreadsheets. Orders live in one place, stock in another, and accounting in a third. An ERP brings all of this into one system. The question is whether to adopt a ready-made platform such as Odoo or build something custom.

When a platform like Odoo makes sense

  • Your processes are fairly standard: sales, purchasing, inventory, invoicing, accounting.
  • You want to start quickly and add modules as you grow.
  • You prefer a proven product with regular updates over a system you must maintain alone.

Odoo is modular, so you can begin with only the apps you need, for example CRM and invoicing, and add inventory, manufacturing or e-commerce later.

When custom software is worth considering

  • Your core process is truly unique and is what makes your business different.
  • No existing product can be adapted without heavy compromise.
  • You have the budget and the people to maintain it for years.

The hybrid approach usually wins

For most companies the best answer is in the middle: use Odoo for everything standard, and build small custom modules or integrations only where your business really is different. You get speed and reliability, and still keep your edge.

Questions to ask before you decide

  1. Which processes cost us the most time or cause the most errors today?
  2. Who will use the system every day, and are they involved in choosing it?
  3. What other tools must it connect to: website, payments, shipping, banks?
  4. How will we migrate our existing data and train the team?

A good implementation partner will challenge your assumptions and tell you honestly if you need less than you think. Start with a workshop, map your processes, and decide from there.
